WHAT IS POWER SUPPLY AND TYPES OF POWER SUPPLIES

Power is critical for the operation of any electronic or electrical system. Power Supplies are thus a very critical component of electrical circuits. The selection of the correct supply can be the critical difference between a machine that works at optimum rates and one that can produce incompatible outcomes. DC to DC converters is available in addition to alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) power supplies.

Types of Power Supplies

Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS)

An SMPS energy supply or computer energy supply is a form of power supply that involves a powerful electrical power conversion switching regulator. Similar to other power supplies, this power supply transmits energy to DC loads, such as a PC (personal computer), from a DC source or AC source, while altering the current and voltage features.

AC Power Supply

Typically, an AC power supply acquires the voltage from the power supply and the voltage can be stepped up or down to the required voltage using a transformer and some filtering may take place.

 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

allows a PC to continue to work as the primary power supply is lost for some moment. A UPS involves an energy-saving battery when the unit detects a power loss from the primary source.

A DC power supply

This one offers its load with a coherent DC voltage. A DC power supply could be regulated from a DC supply or from an AC supply such as the power supply, based on its strategy.

Programmable power supply

This sort of power supply allows remote control over otherwise digital interfaces such as GPIB or RS232 for operation via the analog input. This supply’s regulated characteristics include present, voltage, frequency. Such supplies are used in a broad spectrum of applications such as semiconductor manufacturing, X-ray generators, and tracking crystal growth.

Linear power supply

This supply feeds other circuits. Its main features are;
  • The efficiency of this power supply ranges from 20 to 25 percent
  • CRGO core or St Alloy are magnetic materials used in this power supply.
  • It’s more consistent, less complicated, and more voluminous.
  • It gives a quicker answer.

Computer Power Supply

The power supply unit in a computer is the part of the hardware used to transform the power supplied from the outlet into usable power for multiple computer parts. The alternating current is converted to direct current. It also prevents overheating by regulating voltage, which can switch on the basis of the power supply manually or automatically.
Several requirements need to be considered when choosing a power supply.
  • The load or circuit power requirements, including voltage-current safety features such as voltage and current load protection limits.
  • Physical size and performance.
  • The system’s noise immunity.
power supply is a basic component in any electric device. Considering factors such as design and development of a power supply is key as technology comes handy to provide more efficient devices. Alongside the types of power supplies, there are also two broad categories of power supplies; regulated and unregulated power supplies. Each of these has its pros and cons.
