Brushless Motor and Hall Effect sensors

Image
Brushless Motors You may have not heard of them or seen the before but you have certainly interacted with them.  Brushless motors  are DC powered motors that do not use brushes for commutation. In a brushless DC motors the rotor is a permanent magnet while the stator is made up of coils. As such, to achieve rotation in a  BLDC motor , the direction of the magnetic field generated by the surrounding coils is changed. In order to control the rotation, one needs adjust the magnitude and direction of the current. To achieve this, you need to first know the position of the rotor. That is where Hall effect  sensors   come into play. Hall Effect Sensors Hall effect sensors are transducers which vary their output voltage in response to a magnetic field.  These  sensors  are often used for current sensing, speed detection and proximity switching. In BLDC motors they are used to identify the position of the rotor. As earlier mentioned, the rotor in BLDC motors is made up of a permanen

Understanding Electric Motor Types and their Uses

Electric Motors Electric motors  are electro-mechanical machines that convert electrical energy to mechanical energy.  They actually produce rotational force. A motor’s operation relies on the interaction between the magnetic and electric field. Motors can be distinctly divided into two types, AC motors DC motors AC Motors AC Motors convert AC to mechanical power. AC motors possess many features and have larger installed base compared to DC motors. They can be further classified into; Induction motors Synchronous motors Linear motors Induction Motors Induction motors are also known as asynchronous motors. They rely on the magnetic field of the stator to produce an electric current in the rotor thus producing torque. They are the most common types of  AC motors  partially due to the fact that they can carry larger capacity of load with single phase induction motors. They are mostly used in household application. The three phase asynchronous motors are mostly used

How the IoT is Changing the Transportation System

The Internet of Things (IoT) IoT is the network of interconnected computer embedded devices like smartphones, home appliance, and automotive among others.  IoT   is revolutionizing various industries from engineering to agriculture. It allows the integration of technology in a new and innovative manner. IoT and transport Digitization of transport and infrastructure systems is one of the most effective ways of making cities smarter, safer and sustainable. IoT comes in handy in reducing congestion of vehicles, optimizing public transit routes while enhancing safety and enabling rapid emergency response where necessary. IoT is able to achieve this through; Data collection IoT is coming in handy in the collection of data with regards to transport infrastructure and vehicles. This data is then used innovatively to leverage the creation of revenue and improve the quality of life for citizens. The data collected is used in the following ways; Manage parking spaces IoT offers

Bluetooth Low Energy Starter Development Kit

Image
Bluetooth Low Energy Bluetooth Low Energy  (BLE) was introduced in the Bluetooth 4.0 specification. Since its introduction in 2004, BLE has gained a lot of popularity since its introduction. This can be attributed to the fact that it maxes out at 1Mbps and consumes between 0.01 to 0.5 watts which is less than a half of what Bluetooth Classic consumes. This makes BLE ideal for IoT. Some electronic gadgets come equipped with BLE but some don’t. In the event that you want to introduce BLE in gadgets, you can use BLE development kits. In this article we are going to feature the Blue Gecko Bluetooth Smart Module Wireless Starter Kit. Blue Gecko Bluetooth Smart Module Wireless Starter Kit. Blue Gecko  Bluetooth Smart Module Wireless Starter Kit   is a product of Silicon Labs.  It is an excellent starter kit that offer users insight into the BGM111 BLE module. The core of the module is the wireless starter kit mainboard that has the following; on-board J-Link debugger Virtual COM
